...and El Vrada is chaperoning. Against his will. With Cruzcampo.

Well... It Happened. The Border Is OPEN.

April 10th came. April 10th went. Nothing happened โ€” the government moved the date. Three extra months of reprieve, and then, on July 15th, the Gibraltar-Spain border opened, exactly as threatened. No queue. No passport stamp. No fence. You just... walk into Spain. Like it's allowed. Like it's NORMAL.

El Vrada has had eight days to process this. He has not processed this.

El Vrada:

"This is it, mate. This is the selling of our country. SOLD. Gift-wrapped. What has Picardo DONE?! I want to see the receipt. I want a REFUND."

El Vrada:

"That border wasn't a queue, it was a FILTER. Now anything can just wander in. And worse โ€” anything can wander OUT."

The Announcement

"Dad, I'm Going To The Feria With The Boys"

Enter Jyzon. Sixteen. El Vrada's pride, joy, and primary source of blood pressure. It's Feria week in La Lรญnea โ€” lights, casetas, churros, fairground rides assembled by men who looked confident enough โ€” and Jyzon's whole squad is going.

Jyzon:

"Dad, it's literally a ten minute walk now. There's not even a border. Everyone's going. It's FINE."

And there it is. Every parent's nightmare. For El Vrada's entire life, the border meant one beautiful thing: your kids couldn't get far. The Rock was a playpen with a frontier for a fence. Jyzon at a loose end? He's at the Piazza. He's at Casemates. He is, at absolute worst, at Eastern Beach.

Not any more. Now "out with my friends" has a radius that includes the entire Iberian Peninsula.

El Vrada:

"That border was the best babysitter in EUROPE. Free. Reliable. Open 24 hours. And Picardo gave it away. Where's the sad face on the news for the PARENTS, eh? WHERE?"

The Week of Denial

"I'm NOT Going To The Feria" โ€” A Week In Quotes

All week, El Vrada has been telling anyone who would listen โ€” and several people who actively tried not to โ€” that he would NOT be going to the Feria.

๐Ÿ“…

Monday, at the kiosk

"Feria? FERIA?! I'm not setting foot in it. It's a trap with churros, mate."

๐Ÿ“…

Tuesday, at The Clipper

"You lot go. Enjoy your flamenco. I'll be here. Defending what's left of the Rock."

๐Ÿ“…

Wednesday, to his mum

"I'd rather do jury service again, Mum. AGAIN. That's how serious I am."

๐Ÿ“…

Thursday, in the group chat

"Not going. Don't ask. ๐Ÿšซ๐ŸŽก" (seen by 14, replied to by 0 โ€” they all knew)

๐ŸŽก

Tonight, 8:47pm

El Vrada, in his good shirt, ironed by his mum, walking across the airfield towards the lights of La Lรญnea. Not going. Absolutely not going. Currently going.

El Vrada:

"I'm not GOING going. I'm chaperoning. It's a security operation. There's a DIFFERENCE, and the difference is that I don't want to be here."

๐Ÿบ The Chaperone's Burden: A Cruzcampo Count

El Vrada is on duty. Watching Jyzon from a caseta at a responsible distance. Each Cruzcampo is strictly operational. Tap to pour the man another โ€” he's been FORCED.

0 of 15 Cruzcampos (for surveillance purposes)
*El Vrada sits down, arms crossed, radiating disapproval at an entire fairground*

He didn't even want to come.

Field Notes

The Official Chaperone Log

๐Ÿ•ต๏ธ

21:02 โ€” Visual contact established

Jyzon and friends at the bumper cars. Subject appears to be... having fun. Suspicious.

๐Ÿข

21:38 โ€” Perimeter breach (pinchitos)

El Vrada leaves post to acquire pinchitos. "Reconnaissance of the food situation." Returns with three. Shares zero.

๐ŸŽถ

22:15 โ€” Foot detected tapping

A sevillana comes on. El Vrada's foot begins moving of its own accord. He glares at it. It continues.

๐Ÿงธ

22:51 โ€” Shooting gallery incident

El Vrada spends โ‚ฌ23 winning a giant teddy "for surveillance cover." The teddy is now called Winston. Winston is non-negotiable.

๐Ÿ“ธ

23:20 โ€” Compromising evidence

Jyzon's mate posts a story of El Vrada mid-sevillana, Cruzcampo in one hand, Winston in the other. Caption: "el vrada UNITS ๐Ÿ”ฅ". It has 400 views.

El Vrada:

"DELETE that. I was blending IN. That's chapter one of the chaperone handbook, mate. Camouflage."

Jyzon:

"Dad you've been here longer than me. My friends went home an HOUR ago."

2:00 AM

The Fence That Once Was

The lights are going out, one caseta at a time. Jyzon walks ahead with Winston under his arm, texting someone called "M ๐ŸŒน" (a separate nightmare, filed for later). And El Vrada stops.

Right there. Where the fence used to be. Fifteen Cruzcampos deep, he stands at the line only he can still see, and looks across it.

No queue to complain about. No guard to nod at. No stamp. Just a warm night breeze moving freely โ€” freely โ€” between two countries, like it doesn't even know what it's crossing.

*He puts one hand up, gently, against a chain-link fence that is not there. It hasn't been there since the 15th.*

El Vrada:

"You were a terrible fence. Ugly. Slow. Made me miss two weddings and a christening. ...I miss you every day."

๐Ÿ˜ข
*A single tear. This time, everybody can tell exactly what it's from.*

Jyzon:

"Dad. You're hugging the air. Come on, Mum's waiting up."

El Vrada:

"One minute, son. Show some respect. ...People QUEUED here."
